Gujarat runs 24 government medical colleges with a combined annual intake of approximately 4,325 MBBS seats. The fleet includes AIIMS Rajkot (Central), ESIC Naroda Ahmedabad, the legacy flagships (B.J. Medical College Ahmedabad established 1946, Medical College Baroda established 1949, MP Shah Jamnagar established 1955, GMC Surat established 1964, Smt. NHL Municipal Ahmedabad established 1963), and a major expansion through the GMERS society network, which operates 13 medical colleges across Gujarat.
The flagship government medical colleges in Gujarat are B.J. Medical College Ahmedabad (1946), Medical College Baroda (1949), Government Medical College Surat (1964), and M.P. Shah Government Medical College Jamnagar (1955). The two municipal corporation colleges, Smt. NHL Municipal (Ahmedabad) and SMIMER (Surat), additionally reserve a LOCAL city-domicile quota beyond standard state-quota allocation.

GMERS Society colleges (13)
GMERS (Gujarat Medical Education & Research Society) is a state government society that operates 13 medical colleges across Gujarat. Compared to traditional state government colleges, GMERS colleges follow a distinct fee structure (₹3 lakh Government Quota, ₹8.25 lakh Management Quota, USD 20,000 NRI Quota) and a slightly different counselling flow. They do not offer regular Management Quota seats; vacancies in NRI seats are reassigned by ACPUGMEC as Management Quota at Management Quota fees.
