Karnataka runs 24 government medical colleges with a combined annual intake of approximately 4,250 MBBS seats. The fleet spans heritage colleges (Mysore Medical College established 1924, Bangalore Medical College & Research Institute established 1955, Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences Hubli 1957), a generation of 2006-2007 state-run "Institutes of Medical Sciences" (Belgaum, Bidar, Hassan, Mandya, Raichur, Shimoga), the 2015 to 2016 expansion (Gulbarga, Gadag, Koppal, Chamarajanagar, Karwar, Kodagu), and a 2021 to 2023 wave (Chikkaballapura, Chikkamagaluru, Haveri, Yadgiri, Chitradurga). Two ESIC Medical Colleges (Rajajinagar Bangalore established 2012 and Gulbarga 2013) operate under the central ESIC schedule.
The flagship Karnataka government medical colleges are Bangalore Medical College & Research Institute (BMCRI, 1955, 250 seats), Mysore Medical College & Research Institute (MMCRI, 1924, 250 seats), Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences Hubli (KIMS, 1957), and Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences Bellary (VIMS, 1961).
