Tamil Nadu runs 38 government medical colleges with a combined annual intake of approximately 5,250 MBBS seats. The fleet includes AIIMS Madurai (Central), two ESIC institutions (K.K. Nagar Chennai and Coimbatore), 33 state government colleges spanning the historic flagships (Madras MC, Stanley MC, Madurai MC) through to a major 2021 expansion that added one government medical college to nearly every district. Rajah Muthiah Medical College (Annamalai University, Chidambaram) and I.R.T. Perundurai also fill seats through DME counselling under Categories B1 and B2 respectively.
The most sought-after government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu are Madras Medical College (Chennai, 1835), Stanley Medical College (Chennai, 1838), Madurai Medical College (Madurai, 1954), Kilpauk Medical College (Chennai, 1960), Tirunelveli Medical College, Thanjavur Medical College, Coimbatore Medical College, and Chengalpattu Medical College. AIIMS Madurai is the newest premier institution, opened in 2021, and admits exclusively through MCC AIQ counselling.
